D.C. United (7-4-5, 26 points) will host the San Jose Earthquakes (5-6-2, 17 points) for the first time at Audi Field on June 1. The Black-and-Red have only lost one of their last five matches against San Jose, but have a 15-17-7 record in club history against the Earthquakes.  


In their last match in MLS, United recorded a 3-3 draw at Audi Field against the Chicago Fire on May 29. Chicago’s C.J. Sapong headed in the opening goal from a free kick in the 12th minute. Two minutes later, Djordje Mihailovic scored off of a deflected shot to give the Fire a 2-0 lead. The Black-and-Red stormed back with a goal from Ulises Segura just before halftime while Lucas Rodríguez thought he tied the game minutes later only to have the goal was disallowed by VAR. After halftime United kept the pressure going as Ulises Segura scored his second goal to tie the game in the 61st minute. Luciano Acosta then scored off a cross from Leonardo Jara in the 81st minute to give D.C. United a 3-2 lead. Chicago came back to tie the game in stoppage time with a goal from Francisco Calvo to rescue a point for the Fire.

The Earthquakes last game was also a close one against Toronto FC on May 26 at BMO Field. Toronto opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a goal from Richie Laryea. It only took San Jose ten minutes to equalize as Chris Wondolowski scored a tap in from close range. After an exciting first half, fans had to wait until the 81st minute to see the next goal as Wondolowski found himself open in the box for another close-range goal to give the Earthquakes a 2-1 win.


San Jose have struggled away from home this season compiling a 1-3-2 away record. The Earthquakes top goalscorer is veteran MLS forward Chris Wondolowski who has recorded six goals so far this season. Cristian Espinoza leads San Jose in assists with six helpers this season. Goalkeeper Daniel Vega has recorded three shutouts while making 44 saves in 13 games played.

The Black-and-Red are unbeaten in their last three matches at Audi Field with a 2-0-1 record during that span. Wayne Rooney is the top goalscorer for D.C. United with eight goals this season. His eight goals rank third in MLS. After providing the assist for Ulises Segura’s first goal against Chicago, Rooney now leads United in assists with five. Paul Arriola will be available for selection after missing the last two games due to the red card he received against Houston on May 18. Bill Hamid has been a key part of D.C. United’s defensive success. The goalkeeper leads MLS in saves with 61 and shutouts with seven.
