Story of the Match

D.C. United returns to Audi Field on Wednesday, May 28, for their sixth and final home match of a packed May schedule. The Black-and-Red has been on a resilient defensive run, compiling a 3-2-2 record across all competitions while allowing just eight goals—only five in MLS play. Goalkeepers Luis Barraza, Kim Joong Hong, and Jordan Farr have each delivered key performances, backed by a cohesive backline. United’s defensive grit has been impressive, and they’ll look to close the month with another commanding display in front of the home crowd.

In their previous encounter, D.C. United fell 2-0 to the New York Red Bulls on May 24. The Black-and-Red conceded a goal in the 42nd minute when New York’s Emil Forsberg found Cameron Harper on the right flank and his low, well-placed shot beat D.C. United goalkeeper Luis Barraza. Despite several close attempts to equalize, United were thwarted by key saves from Red Bulls keeper Carlos Coronel. Barraza, however, continued his impressive form by making four crucial saves during the match. The visitors secured a second goal in second-half stoppage time when Mohammed Sofo found space and sealed the 2-0 victory.

The New England Revolution (5-4-4) enter Wednesday’s match following a dramatic 3-3 road draw against Sporting Kansas City on May 24. The Revs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a 14th-minute strike from Tomás Chancalay, followed by an own goal from SKC’s Jacob Bartlett in the 23rd minute. Kansas City responded with three unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead, but New England salvaged a point with an 84th-minute equalizer from Maxi Urruti.

Midfielder Carles Gil remains the engine of New England’s attack, tallying six goals and three assists in 13 appearances—leading a unit that has otherwise struggled for consistency, managing just 15 goals on the season. Still, D.C. United will need to stay alert against a Revs side loaded with attacking talent.

Defensively, New England has been solid, conceding only 13 goals in as many games. The Black-and-Red will need to be clinical in the final third to break down a disciplined back line.

Last Match Against New England Revolution | October 5, 2024 @ Gillette Stadium

The last meeting between D.C. United and the New England Revolution took place on October 5, 2024, at Gillette Stadium. The Black-and-Red came out firing, taking the lead in just the third minute when Pedro Santos unleashed a powerful volley that snuck past goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič at the near post. Just five minutes later, Christian Benteke doubled the advantage, capitalizing on a defensive miscue. A long, looping ball over the top caught the Revolution backline off guard, and Benteke’s header from outside the box bounced past a stranded Ivačič to make it 2-0. Despite a late push from New England—who pulled one back in the 74th minute via a Matti Peltola own goal—D.C. United held firm to secure an important win on the road.
