Match Preview - D.C. United vs Inter Miami CF on Saturday, August 23
D.C. United returns to Audi Field this Saturday, August 23, to take on Inter Miami CF with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. ET. Saturday will mark Head Coach René Weiler’s first home match in front of the Audi Field faithful after coming away with a point on the road against CF Montréal in a 1-1 draw.
The Black-and-Red (4-15-8, 20 pts) had a different look to them under Weiler with defender Lukas MacNaughton getting his first start since May 3 against the Colorado Rapids and pushing defender Aaron Herrera higher up into the midfield. Weiler also brought goalkeeper Luis Barraza back into the starting eleven after being on the bench last match against the New England Revolution. With some new faces in the lineup, D.C. United looked threatening and outshot CF Montréal 16-9.
Lukas MacNaughton made an instant impact on the field, winning 100% of his aerial duels and providing five passes into the final third. Aaron Herrera also was very active in the offensive third, creating the most chances for the Black-and-Red with two and recording four crosses into the box. Homegrown midfielder Jackson Hopkins stole the show, scoring his first ever MLS goal in the 28th minute after driving down Montréal’s midfielder and burying a right footed shot from outside the box into the bottom corner. The home side would tie the game in the 41st minute after defender Luca Petrasso finished a ball from forward Prince Owusu. Luis Barraza would record two saves to keep the scoreline tied, leaving Montréal with a point.

He will look to lean on midfielder Gabriel Pirani and company to get the scoring started early with forward Christian Benteke missing the match due to yellow card accumulation. D.C. United will also be without midfielder Boris Enow who also misses the match due to yellow card accumulation.
The last meeting between these two sides came on May 18, 204, when United fell 1-0 at Chase Stadium. This will be the first meeting between the clubs this season and United will look to break through the defense that has only allowed 39 goals this season. United will also be keen to keep tabs on midfielder Sergio Busquets who has six assists this season and forward Luis Suarez who has 16 goal contributions (six goals and 10 assists).
Inter Miami CF (13-5-6, 45 pts) sits in fifth place in the Eastern Conference and is coming off a Leagues Cup win against Tigres of Liga MX on Wednesday, Aug. 20. The Herons have only lost two matches in their last 10 and have scored 53 goals this MLS season, 47 of them coming from open play. Miami’s new signing, midfielder Rodrigo De Paul, will look to bolster the Herons attack, playing in his third MLS match since signing with the club. The Black-and-Red kept the likes of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez at bay for most of the match, limiting them to four total shots across 90 minutes. D.C. Then in stoppage time, Leonardo Campana lost broke free from his defender and finished a right footed shot over goalkeeper Alex Bono, securing all three points for the home side.
