Legacy and Purpose: Beyond the Pitch

What comes to mind when you hear the word legacy? The textbook definition is “the long-lasting impact of particular events, actions, etc. that took place in the past, or of a person’s life.”

Honor the Legacy is this year’s tagline for the Black and Red. As we celebrate 30 years of MLS and D.C. United, it’s only fitting that we recognize the former players who continue to make an impact in our community, even after their time on the pitch has come to a close.

Luciano Emilio, 2007 MLS Golden Boot winner, MVP, Newcomer of the Year, and Best XI honoree, is one of those players. Long after the final whistle of his career, Emilio continues to embody the values of D.C. United through his deep commitment to serving his community.

Today, Emilio is empowering youth in Maryland's soccer community through coaching and mentorship. Humility and passion define his dedication as he pours into the next generation, showing the power of hard work, resilience, and giving back to the community.

His commitment to service extends well beyond the game. Over the years, Emilio has taken on a number of roles dedicated to supporting and uplifting youth, including most recently, serving as a chaplain. Last holiday season, he stepped up as a volunteer for D.C. United’s Season of Giving, spreading joy to children and families through meaningful acts of service. At one event, he helped build 60 beds for families in transition, ensuring they had a place to rest and a reason to smile during the holidays and another he joined children in making crafts and playing holiday games. Emilio is also a proud advocate for D.C. United’s partnership with the DC Department of Corrections through the Twinning Project, which is a powerful initiative that uses soccer to foster leadership, build confidence, and support individuals that are incarcerated as they prepare to reenter society. Through it all, he continues to lead with humility and heart, proving that legacy isn’t just what you leave behind, it's how you keep showing up.

At D.C. United’s Legacy Match on July 26, Emilio was honored as our Community Champion for his ongoing work and impact throughout the greater DMV. Each quarter, we recognize individuals whose actions create meaningful change. This recognition was extra special, as Emilio once wore D.C. United across his chest and is now being recognized for his great work off the pitch, truly showing us what it means to honor the legacy.
