D.C. United’s Michael Farfan and the Washington Spirit were invited to the White House grounds on Tuesday, June 16 to watch Team USA face off against Nigeria in the Women’s World Cup.
Additionally, local female youth players, including United Soccer Club's own Excel Girls Academy, were invited, and individuals were able to ask the Spirit players questions about playing professional soccer and their daily lives.
"The event provided youth with an opportunity to visit the White House grounds and participate in a Q&A session with the professional athletes in attendance," Victor Melara said, who is the director of community relations for D.C. United.
After food and drinks were served and the question and answer period ended, players mingled with the young girls, signed autographs and posed for pictures in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.  At halftime, the attendees were able to see other parts of the grounds, including a tour of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, and take pictures in front of the West Wing.
"It was a cool experience to see how passionate these young girls were about the game of soccer and how much they wanted to learn," Michael Farfan said. "It was even nicer to see them celebrating the win for the USWNT."
