The 2021 MLS SuperDraft will begin on January 21 at 2 p.m. ET with D.C. United having the fourth and 31st overall selections.
The draft will consist of three rounds and 81 total selections. Expansion team, Austin FC, holds the first selection. The following eight selections are from teams that did not qualify for the Audi 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs beginning with the team with the fewest 2020 regular season points per game. The remaining 18 positions are ranked by fewest regular season points per game among the teams that were eliminated in the same round of the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. A club that acquired a Round 4 pick via trade will receive a compensatory pick at the conclusion of Round 3. The order on the compensatory picks will be based on the pick’s original holder.
Teams are given three minutes to make a selection. Each team is permitted one timeout which can be used to add an additional three minutes to their selection time. Selections must be made immediately following the timeout (no additional time given).
If a team fails to make their selection in the designated time, they must wait until after the next pick to make their selection. The team that was delinquent with its selection must immediately have its choice ready following the selection of the club that followed. If not, the original club must again wait for the next selection to be made.
Prior to being announced, trades need to be verified and approved by the Commissioner and/or his designee. Trade announcements will not reveal the identity of players until those players have been contacted by their respective clubs.
In the event that a team passes, it shall be precluded from making any further picks for the remainder of the MLS SuperDraft.
