Match Recap | D.C. United score dramatic equalizer in a 2-2 draw against Toronto

Griff First goal

D.C. United came from behind in dramatic fashion for the second time this year against Toronto FC as they draw 2-2 in their 12th match of the 2020 MLS Regular Season.

The Black-and-Red started the match on the front foot and their high-press paid-off immediately, as forward Ola Kamara burst through the Toronto backline in the fifth minute and neatly slotted home off the inside of the post to give United the early lead. Yamil Asad came inches away from doubling the Black-and-Red’s lead in the 11th minute when his powerful volley from just inside the 18 cannoned down off the crossbar right on the goal line and out. Toronto levelled the score in the 17th minute as Alejandro Pozuelo found the bottom corner after picking up a loose ball inside the box. The sides went into the break level at 1-1.

Homegrown midfielder, Griffin Yow, entered the match at the start of the second half for his fifth appearance of the season replacing Mohammed Abu, who went down injured on the stroke of halftime. The visitors took the lead in the 60th minute when Ayo Akinola headed home a Pablo Piatti cross just past the outstretched fingertips of Hamid. United fought back in chase of an equalizer and their efforts were rewarded in the 88th minute when Griffin Yow emphatically volleyed home his first career league goal from 12 yards out. Riding their momentum, United nearly completed the comeback deep into stoppage time when a lofted diagonal ball into the box found Yow, who squared it for Sorga, only to see his first-time effort tipped over the bar by a great save from the Toronto keeper.

Despite United’s onslaught of pressure in the final ten minutes, the match ended 2-2, as a United side brimming with five Homegrown players on the pitch fought back to earn a well-deserved point against the third-placed side in the East.

D.C. United travel to Nashville on Wednesday, September, 23 for their next match, where they will face-off against expansion side, Nashville SC, at 8:30 p.m. EST.
