D.C. United (1-2-2, 5 pts.) will continue the 2020 MLS Regular Season with their sixth match against FC Cincinnati on Friday, August 21 at 7:30 p.m. ET at Nippert Stadium. This will be the Black-and-Red’s first game since returning from the MLS is Back Tournament at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex in July.
D.C. United will face FC Cincinnati for the first time in 2020. They played twice in 2019, with D.C. United winning the first matchup 4-1 at Nippert Stadium in Cincinnati on July 18, 2019. The two teams then battled to a 0-0 draw in their second matchup in the regular season finale at Audi Field on Oct. 6, 2019.
At the MLS is Back Tournament, D.C. United drew their first game of the tournament to Toronto FC on July 13, coming back from a 2-0 deficit with a man down to earn a 2-2 draw. The two D.C. United goals came from Federico HiguaÃn, who chipped the goalkeeper moments after making his debut for the Black-and-Red then Frédéric Brillant scored a header late in second half stoppage time to tie the match. D.C. United then drew 1-1 in their second match of the tournament against the New England Revolution after Federico Higuain capitalized on a second half defensive mistake from New England to equalize. In their third and final game of the tournament on July 21, the Black-and-Red lost to Montreal Impact 1-0, knocking them out of the tournament and securing D.C. United a fourth-place finish in Group C.
FC Cincinnati finished second in Group E at the MLS is Back Tournament. After losing 4-0 in their first game of the tournament against the Columbus Crew, Cincinnati came back and defeated Atlanta United 1-0 and New York Red Bulls 2-0 to secure their spot in the Round of 16. They played the Portland Timbers and after finishing 1-1 in regulation, they lost 4-2 in penalties to knock them out of the tournament.
