Prior to the MLS Expansion Draft on Dec. 12, D.C. United have protected Luciano Acosta, Paul Arriola, Steve Birnbaum, Frédéric Brillant, Russell Canouse, Nick DeLeon, Taylor Kemp, Darren Mattocks, Patrick Mullins, Kofi Opare, and Zoltán Stieber. United bolstered their team in the 2017 summer transfer window with Young Designated Player and USMNT midfielder Paul Arriola, Hungarian international Zoltán Stieber and former TSG 1899 Hoffeinheim midfielder Russell Canouse. Additionally, United protected their new acquisitions defender Frédéric Brillant and Jamaican international forward Darren Mattocks.
Ian Harkes, Jalen Robinson and Chris Durkin are automatically protected because of their Homegrown status.

The Expansion Draft will be streamed lived at 2 p.m. ET.
The 2017 Expansion Draft will include five rounds, giving Los Angeles FC the opportunity to pick five players ahead of their entry into the league in 2018. In the Expansion Draft, LAFC are allowed to select eligible players from the other 22 rosters in Major League Soccer to add to their inaugural MLS roster for the 2018 season. Each current MLS club has the ability to protect 11 players from selection and teams may only lose one player.

Following the Expansion Draft at 2 PM ET, all eligible free agents are allowed to begin contract negotiations with MLS teams.
