Six reasons to watch United in the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup

United host amateur side Christos FC Tuesday night at the Maryland SoccerPlex at 7:30 PM in the fourth round of the 2017 edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, North America's oldest club soccer competition.

The Black-and-Red host Christos in their 55th match in the Open Cup, the third most of any MLS team. With a record of 38-16, United have the second-most victories of any team from Major League Soccer in the tournament (behind Chicago, with 45), and the third-most goals scored (107).

United have won the entire tournament three times in their history since 1996, winning the cup in Major League Soccer's inaugural season, 2008 and 2013. They have reached the final on two other occasions, falling to the Dallas Burn in a penalty shootout in 1997 and the Seattle Sounders in 2009.

United forward Sébastien Le Toux is the all-time leading goalscorer in the competition with 16 goals. The French forward scored his first goal in the competition for the Sounders in 2007, back when the Seattle side was in USL-Pro.

No amateur side has ever advanced beyond the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup in the modern era. United's USL-affiliate, the Richmond Kickers, were an amateur team (playing in the USSL Premier League) when they won the tournament in 1995, albeit before Major League Soccer.

99 total teams qualify for this year's edition of the tournament, ranging from 19 MLS teams, six NASL, 18 from USL, 21 from PDL, 18 from NPSL and 17 amateur sides.

Following the fourth round matchups this week, the round of sixteen (fifth round) draw will be held on June 15, two days following United's match against Christos.
