D.C. United showed heart in its fight back from deficit, not once, but twice Saturday night. First, after Robbie Keane found the net in the 7th minute, Chris Pontius netted the equalizer in the 39th minute. Preying on a casual approach from Omar Gonzalez, Pontius stripped the center back of the ball, then beat Jaime Penedo on a breakaway.

Then, Michael Stephens found the back of the net in the 81st minute, but the Black-and-Red didn’t fold. Three minutes later, Perry Kitchen found Kyle Porter, who headed the ball past a diving Penedo. The final score was 2-2.

4th assist
Perry Kitchen’s game-winning assist was his fourth of the season. Kitchen was already leading D.C. United in assists before last night, and remains the leader now. Additionally, the talented center midfielder is showing his passing range, accuracy and ability to control the midfield along with Lewis Neal; the two combined for 29.3% of United’s passes (130 of the totally 525 passes). 

Possession Numbers
DCU dominated possession at RFK on Saturday night. Not only did United have 525 passes to LA’s 375, but the Black-and-Red had a passing accuracy of 82%, while the Galaxy’s passing accuracy was lower, at 74%. Also worth noting, United had an impressive 28 crosses, 22 in open play, as compared to the Galaxy’s 3 open play crosses. Lastly, D.C. had a higher percentage of possession for 70 of the 90 minutes of play.
