D.C. United announced today that MRI results on goalkeeper Bill Hamid's left ankle revealed a grade 1 deltoid ligament sprain and bone contusions in the talus and medial tibia. He suffered the injury during the U-23 Men’s National Team 3-3 tie with El Salvador and was subbed late in the first half of Monday’s contest after suffering the injury in the 32nd minute. He is expected to miss one to three weeks of action.
“It’s unfortunate that Bill sustained multiple injuries against El Salvador and was not physically able to finish the match,” said United General Manager Dave Kasper. “We are proud of his effort and commitment with the U-23 team.”
Hamid, a native of nearby Annandale, Virginia, made United history on 9/2/09, when he became the first D.C. United Academy player to sign with the first team. Since his historic signing, Hamid has been a regular with the Black-and-Red. In 2011, he started all 28 games he appeared in, logging 2392 minutes, and boasting one of the best goals against average in all of Major League Soccer.
Hamid recently earned his first cap with the full U.S. Men’s National Team when he kept a clean sheet in the team’s 1-0 win over Venezuela in Glendale, Ariz. on 1/12/12. United’s netminder was called up several times in 2011, serving as Tim Howard’s backup in games against Mexico (Aug. 10), Costa Rica (Sept. 2), Belgium (Sept. 6), Honduras (Oct. 8), Ecuador (Oct. 11), France (Nov. 11), and Slovenia (Nov. 15).
