Post-match quotes: United 1 - Earthquakes 1

D.C. United vs San Jose Earthquakes

D.C. UNITED HEAD COACH CURT ONALFO

On if the 1-1 draw was a fair result

“[It was a] tale of two half’s. I don’t think we we’re very good the first half. I thought we got out-competed and a gave up a goal off a set-piece which was a major point of emphasis going into the game knowing they’re very good off corner kicks. So I was disappointed but I was pleased with the response. I thought the second half we were the better team. San Jose was the better team in the first half; we were the better team in the second. Maybe with a little luck we could have snuck out of here with three points but overall, a point’s probably a fair result. It’s a point that we need.

On the play of Andy Najar in the second half

“He had a little bit of a quiet first half, partly because we weren’t switching the ball enough and finding him. We made that a major point of emphasis at halftime. We needed to find [Chris] Pontius and Andy more and kind of go at them wide. We certainly listened and did an excellent job in the second half and he scores a great goal.

D.C. UNITED MIDFIELDER SANTINO QUARANTA

On if the 1-1 draw was a fair result

“I think that it was night and day, first and second half for us. I think the first half we forgot how to play football a little bit. I think that in the second half when we tied it 1-1 I think everybody’s mentality changed a little bit. We did more of the dirty work and I think the movement in the second half was way better, our mentality was better coming out in the second half, and we were getting stuck-in in tackles. It was night and day.

On if the comeback in the second half was indicative of the season

“Early on we would have lost this game. The guys put up a good fight. It’s getting better as we kind of find what works here, and we just have to keep consistently trying to get better. It’s all we can ask.

D.C. UNITED MIDFIELDER STEPHEN KING

On the battle in the midfield

“There’s always individual battles every position. We fought hard and there was a lot of good fight out there. There [were] a lot of good passing sequences. [San Jose midfielder] Bobby Convey’s a great player, someone I’ve watched growing up. He’s from the Philadelphia area so I’ve always known him.”

On the assist on the goal by D.C. United forward Andy Najar

“[D.C. United forward] Jamie [Moreno] found me with a good through-ball. I had kind of my back to the ball, I saw Andy at the backpost and just took a touch around a defender and chipped it backpost and he did a nice job finishing it. Andy’s come up pretty big for us with some big goals this year, and it was a great goal and a great point.”
