D.C. United to celebrate Fourth Annual United for D.C. Day

Washington, D.C. (September 21, 2009) - D.C. United and its charitable arm, United for D.C., announced today details for the fourth United for D.C. Day. Celebrated during the United vs. San Jose Earthquakes home game on September 27, a portion of the proceeds from all tickets sold will be donated to United for D.C. in order to support the charity’s signature programs: Kicks for Kids, United Reads and United Soccer Club.

“United for D.C. Day was created to raise awareness and additional funds for the charity,” said United for D.C. Foundation Manager Kate Larned. “Many of our fans aren’t aware of the work we are doing in the community. We would like this day to not only raise awareness, but to encourage the D.C. United community to become more involved. It also provides the opportunity for participants from the three programs to enjoy the game.”

United for D.C. will have a presence throughout the game including collections, videos and interactive booths at Main Gate and Soccer Celebration. Fans will be able to support the charity through on-site donations as well as via raffles and games at the United for D.C. booths. In addition, a group of United for D.C. participants will serve as the ball kids, touchline kids and the ceremonial kicker in the pre-game activities.

Fans can also support United for D.C.’s Kicks for Kids Program by donating any unused tickets to the Kick Back Program. By donating unused season tickets, United for D.C. is able to allocate those seats to benefit more deserving youth. All monetary and ticket donations are tax deductible.

Founded in 2002, United for D.C. serves youth and families with a focus on literacy and healthy lifestyles. Through the Kicks for Kids program, more than 7,000 underprivileged children will have an opportunity to watch United play this season alone. United Reads, currently present in six DC elementary schools, distributed nearly 8,000 books during player visits throughout the spring. The United Soccer Club is an after-school soccer program, which teaches fundamental skills and hosts games and scrimmages in ten sites throughout Washington, D.C.
