Four wins in a row. Multiple goals in eight straight. Six games unbeaten. United have been in scintillating form over the last several months, and people are beginning to take notice. In Major League Soccer's Week 33 Power Rankings, the Black-and-Red moved into the Top 5 for the first time this season. Climbing three spots from last week, Ben Olsen's side claimed fourth after their strong performance against New York City FC on Sunday, Oct. 16 at RFK.
The dominant showing against Patrick Vieira's side put the Black-and-Red in the top three of ESPNFC's MLS Power Rankings as well. While FC Dallas and the New York Red Bulls remained unchanged at one and two, respectively, United jumped five spots to overtake Toronto FC for the third-best ranking.
Between Bill Hamid's impressive eight-save outing, Boswell's 350th MLS start (good for third all-time in league history), Patrick Mullins' eighth goal of the year and Lloyd Sam's career-high tenth assist, United earned a crucial victory against a fellow Eastern Conference opponent and clinched a postseason berth for the third straight season. The Black-and-Red now travel to Orlando for Decision Day, the final match of the regular season to face already-disqualified Orlando City SC. In order to ensure a home Knockout Round match, United will need to stay above the Montreal Impact (46 and 45 points, respectively). The match kicks off on WJLA (ABC7) at 4 PM.
