D.C. United have re-signed MLS veteran defender and free agent Sean Franklin to a multi-year contract.

“Sean has been an important player for our team over the past three seasons,” Dave Kasper, United general manager and VP of soccer operations, said. “He has been among the best veteran defenders in the league, and his experience and leadership have been invaluable to us. We are pleased to have Sean back and look forward to his continued contributions in 2017.”

Franklin has been a constant feature in the Black-and-Red’s starting XI since he was selected by D.C. United in Stage One of the 2013 Re-Entry Draft on Dec. 12, 2013. The 31-year-old has made 82 appearances (80 starts) and played in 7,115 minutes over three seasons while also providing the Black-and-Red with offensive support, scoring a goal each season and supplying six assists.

Since he was selected fourth overall in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft, Franklin has made 242 appearances. In nine MLS seasons, he has scored eight goals and recorded 26 assists while amassing 20,762 minutes. The California native also boasts extensive postseason experience; he ranks in the top 10 among active players for most postseason starts, appearances, minutes and assists.
