United coaches preparing for draft

D.C. United coaches and the technical staff are heading to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on Friday morning to attend the 2012 MLS Combine from January 6-11 in advance of the SuperDraft on January 12.

United holds the seventh overall pick in the SuperDraft’s first round, and won’t pick again until the Supplemental Draft that is scheduled for January 17 and will take place via a conference call.

According to assistant coach Chad Ashton, it’s more than just the on-the-field traits D.C. is hoping to find in a quality collegiate player.

“You’re looking for a good person,” he said. “[Someone] that you know is going to have all the tangible qualities that you’re looking for, a guy that has good values and is going to work his tail off, a guy who refuses to lose, wants to win games and all of that nature.”

In the Supplemental draft, D.C. will pick with the 26th (second round), 45th (third round) and 64th (fourth round) overall spots as the club continues to round out the roster for the 2012 season.
