D.C. United (12-10-9, 45 points) defeats Portland Timbers (13-12-4, 43 Points), 0-1 at Providence Park to earn the clubā€™s sixth road victory of the season. Bill Hamid and the defensive backline earned its eleventh shutout of the season.

ā€œThere were four or five guys that were laid out after that game. Absolutely exhausted and it shows that this group is committed and wants to do something in the playoffs.ā€ Head Coach Ben Olsen said after the match. The Black-and-Red were rewarded for their hard work in the 25th minute after Ulises Segura sent a cross into the middle of the box and Bill Touiloma knocked the ball into his own net for the gameā€™s only goal.

Paul Arriola nearly finished his eighth of the season in the 15th minute of the match. FrĆ©dĆ©ric Brillant played a driven ball through tight space and Arriolaā€™s deft touch allowed him to drive the ball to the edge of the box. In the 38th minute, Rooney whipped in a pacey corner kick that ricochetted off several Timbers players and ended up crossing the goal line. VAR was used however they viewed the wrong angle and did not allow the goal. ā€œIt did cross the line,ā€ Rooney said with a smile after the match. ā€œI took the corner and I was quite a distance away but all of the players saw still shots of the ball over the line and itā€™s a shame because it would have made the game easier on us.ā€

United took the 0-1 lead into the locker room at halftime. The second half was a test for United defensively, as they dug in and gutted out the clubā€™s eleventh shutout of the season. Hamidā€™s best save of the match occurred in the 60th minute after Portland Timberā€™s Eryk Williamson drove a shot off of Joseph Moraā€™s leg, after which Hamid adjusted his positioning and stopped the deflected shot to keep Unitedā€™s shutout bid alive.
