RECAP | D.C. United defeat Inter Miami CF

D.C. United

D.C. United faced Inter Miami for the first time in club history on March 7 at Audi Field.  The Black-and-Red made one change to the starting lineup as Yamil Asad replaced an injured Ulises Segura.

Rodolfo Pizarro scored the first goal in Inter Miami’s history in the second minute after finishing a cross from Lewis Morgan.  In the 15th minute, Erik Sorga came on to make his debut for the Black-and-Red, replacing an injured Ola Kamara. D.C. United began to put the pressure on Miami with Julian Gressel and Russell Canouse combining down the right side to deliver some dangerous crosses.  Oniel Fisher replaced Joseph Mora in stoppage time of the first half to make his first appearance since the match against Montreal on Sept. 29, 2018.

In the second half, Inter Miami’s Roman Torres received a red card in the 54th minute after VAR ruled an intentional handball on an obvious goalscoring opportunity.  Shortly after, D.C. United were awarded a penalty after Edison Flores was brought down in the box in the 59th minute. Yamil Asad sent the goalkeeper the wrong way and calmly finished into the bottom left corner to level the score.  The Black-and-Red kept the pressure on Miami with Frédéric Brillant putting United ahead with a right-footed volley in the 61st minute.  Chris Odoi-Atsem returned to the field for the first time since Aug. 4, 2019 as he replaced the goalscorer Yamil Asad in the 73rd minute.  The Black-and-Red stayed compact defensively and recorded their first victory of the season.

D.C. United travel to Ohio for their next match to take on FC Cincinnati on March 14.
