D.C. United built a commanding two-goal first half lead at GEODIS Park before being pegged back to a 2-2 draw by Nashville SC on Saturday night, finishing with ten men after defender Silvan Hefti was sent off in the 74th minute. The result moves the Black-and-Red to 4-4-4 with 16 points in the Eastern Conference. Forward Louis Munteanu and defender Lucas Bartlett scored the goals for D.C. United in a first half that showcased the best of the club's attacking and set piece quality against the Eastern Conference's top side.
Head Coach René Weiler named an unchanged starting XI from Sunday's 2-0 win over New York City FC. D.C. United lined up with goalkeeper Sean Johnson behind a back four of defender Silvan Hefti, captian Lucas Bartlett, Kye Rowles, and Keisuke Kurokawa with a midfield Matti Peltola, Brandon Servania, Joao Peglow and Jared Stroud. Forwards Jackson Hopkins and Louis Munteanu led the attack.
D.C. United were sharp and direct from the opening whistle against the Eastern Conference leaders. The Black-and-Red created a series of early chances, with Hopkins and Rowles both testing goalkeeper Brian Schwake in the opening exchanges before Munteanu broke the deadlock in the 25th minute, heading home a cross from Hefti to put the visitors ahead. The lead was doubled four minutes later when Bartlett met a Kurokawa cross from a corner with a powerful header to the bottom right corner, with the goal confirmed by a VAR review to make it 2-0. Nashville pushed back before the break, with Johnson making sharp saves on Cristian Espinoza in the 35th and 40th minutes and Alex Muyl in the 44th minute to maintain the advantage. Mukhtar struck the crossbar with a free kick deep into first half stoppage time, but the Black-and-Red went into the interval 2-0 ahead. Hefti was cautioned in the 45th minute.
Weiler introduced midfielder Aaron Herrera for Jared Stroud in the 67th minute as D.C. United looked to manage the result. Nashville had a goal overturned by VAR in the 60th minute when Jeisson Palacios was ruled offside, maintaining the two-goal cushion. The match turned dramatically in the 74th minute when Hefti received his second yellow card and was sent off, leaving D.C. United to defend with ten men. Nashville immediately piled on the pressure. Forward Warren Madrigal, who had come on as a substitute in the 62nd minute, pulled one back moments later in the 76th minute, finishing from close range to make it 1-2. Weiler brought on defender Nikola Markovic for Jackson Hopkins in the 77th minute and forward Tai Baribo for Louis Munteanu in the 84th minute as D.C. United looked to hold on. Johnson made a critical save on Lovitz in the 71st minute and Corcoran in the 76th minute to keep the lead intact momentarily, but Madrigal struck again in the 89th minute, finishing from the center of the box assisted by a cross from Andy Najar to level the score at 2-2 and earn Nashville a share of the points.
Munteanu was outstanding across his time on the pitch, scoring and providing constant movement and physicality against the Eastern Conference's best defensive unit. Bartlett's set piece goal was a reward for a commanding first half display from the captain. Johnson made five saves across the 90 minutes and kept D.C. United in the match after Hefti's dismissal, with his stop on Corcoran at 1-2 a particularly crucial moment. The result was a difficult way to earn a point against the Eastern Conference leaders, but a point at GEODIS Park against a Nashville side that has lost only once all season remains a creditable outcome.
