Post-Match Recap: D.C. United Falls 2-1 to Inter Miami CF in Historic Night at M&T Bank Stadium

D.C. United fell 2-1 to Inter Miami CF on Saturday afternoon at M&T Bank Stadium, dropping to 1-2-0 on the 2026 MLS season. Despite a heartbreaking result, the Black-and-Red showed tremendous fight and resilience in front of a record-breaking crowd of 72,026, the largest home attendance in club history.

The atmosphere inside M&T Bank Stadium was reminiscent of the old D.C. United days, as supporters filled the stadium in black and red. Maryland rapper Phil Ade delivered an energetic pre-match performance that set the tone for the evening, while former NFL running back Mark Ingram served as flag bearer before kickoff. Grammy nominated artist Wale performed at halftime, keeping the energy high throughout the night. Saturday's attendance surpassed D.C. United's previous home record of 57,431 set during the club's 1997 MLS Cup triumph over the Colorado Rapids at RFK Stadium, and ranked among the top 10 all-time standalone crowds in Major League Soccer history.

Head Coach René Weiler made two changes to the starting XI from last week's 1-0 defeat at Austin FC, bringing Gabriel Pirani and Jackson Hopkins into the lineup from the start. D.C. United set up in a 4-4-2 with Tai Baribo and Jackson Hopkins leading the line, João Peglow and Gabriel Pirani on the flanks, and Matti Peltola and Brandon Servania anchoring the midfield in front of a back four of Silvan Hefti, Lucas Bartlett, Kye Rowles, and Keisuke Kurokawa, with captain Bartlett marshaling the defense.

D.C. United showed early intent, with Jackson Hopkins testing Miami goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair from outside the box in the 16th minute, but Inter Miami struck first in the 17th minute when Rodrigo De Paul collected the ball on the right side of the box and fired a right-footed shot into the top left corner, assisted by Telasco Segovia. Tai Baribo was denied by the offside flag in the 21st minute before Gabriel Pirani struck close with a sharp left-footed effort from distance in the 24th minute as the Black-and-Red pushed for an equalizer.

Miami doubled their advantage in the 27th minute when Lionel Messi finished from the left side of the box to the lower right corner, assisted by Mateo Silvetti. D.C. United continued to create before the break, with Lucas Bartlett seeing a powerful header blocked by Maximiliano Falcón in the 31st minute before Silvan Hefti's left-footed effort from outside the box was denied by Micael dos Santos in the 34th minute.  The Black-and-Red went into halftime trailing 2-0, outshooting Miami 6-5.

D.C. United came out in the second half pressing high and creating chances in waves. Weiler made a double substitution in the 61st minute, introducing Louis Munteanu for Gabriel Pirani and Nikola Markovic for Brandon Servania to inject fresh energy into the lineup.  Then in the 75th minute, the Black-and-Red jumped on a bad pass from Miami and drove down the right flank, where Homegrown Jackson Hopkins got a shot off, forcing St. Clair to make a save.  The rebound ultimately fell right to Tai Baribo, pulling D.C. United within one and sending the 72,026 fans into a frenzy. It was Baribo's second goal of the 2026 season and a reminder of just how dangerous the Israeli forward can be. Hopkins was replaced by Caden Clark in the 82nd minute as Weiler pushed for an equalizer, and D.C. United continued to press until the final whistle, forcing late saves and earning corners, but were unable to find the equalizer as Inter Miami held on for the 2-1 victory.

Despite the result, Saturday night stood as a landmark moment for D.C. United and the growth of soccer in the DMV region. The Black-and-Red showed they can compete with the best in MLS, and the atmosphere generated in Baltimore was a powerful statement about the appetite for this club.

D.C. United are now 1-2-0 with three points on the 2026 MLS season and hold a 4-4-3 record against Inter Miami CF all-time in regular season matchups. The Black-and-Red will now shift their focus to the road, traveling to take on the Chicago Fire FC on Saturday, March 14. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET.
