D.C. United fell 2-1 to Charlotte FC on Saturday night at Audi Field, moving to 6-8-11 on the 2026 MLS season. The Black-and-Red generated the better of the chances by a wide margin, finishing with a 31-10 edge in total shots and putting 11 on target, but ran into a Kristijan Kahlina performance that produced 10 saves for the visitors. Captain Lucas Bartlett scored D.C. United's lone goal two minutes into the second half.Â
The Black-and-Red lined up in a 4-2-3-1 in front of goalkeeper Sean Johnson, with a back four of defenders Kimito Nono, Lucas Bartlett, Kye Rowles and Keisuke Kurokawa. Midfielders Andre Dozzell and Brandon Servania anchored the midfield, with midfielder Jackson Hopkins and forward Louis Munteanu on the flanks of midfielder João Peglow. Forward Tai Baribo led the line.Â
D.C. United were the more dangerous side from the opening whistle. Baribo headed just wide off a Nono cross in the 16th minute, Rowles forced a save from Kahlina three minutes later, and Munteanu was denied in the 25th minute after Peglow played him in behind. Against the run of play, Charlotte broke through in the 22nd minute when midfielder Ashley Westwood found the top right corner from outside the box. Hopkins and Baribo both tested Kahlina before the interval, but the Black-and-Red went into halftime trailing 1-0.Â
The equalizer came two minutes after the restart. Kurokawa delivered a cross from a set piece and Bartlett headed home from very close range in the 47th minute to level the match at 1-1. D.C. United kept the pressure on from there, with Baribo striking the crossbar in the 51st minute, Bartlett forcing another save from Kahlina with a header off a Munteanu cross in the 53rd, and Dozzell drawing a save from distance in the 60th. Charlotte restored its lead in the 71st minute when Westwood picked out forward Allan Saint-Maximin, who finished from a difficult angle on the left into the bottom right corner.Â
The Black-and-Red pushed for a second equalizer through the final whistle. Munteanu hit the crossbar from outside the box in the 75th minute off a Peglow lay-off, midfielder Matti Peltola drew a diving save from Kahlina five minutes later, and Kahlina turned aside Munteanu again in the 85th. D.C. United put the ball in the net in the 87th minute through Bartlett off another Kurokawa delivery, but the effort was ruled out for offside. Johnson pushed forward for a corner in the sixth minute of stoppage time and headed just wide of the left post.Â
Munteanu led the Black-and-Red with nine shots and three chances created across 90 minutes. Kurokawa also created three chances and recorded the assist on the equalizer. Bartlett added eight defensive contributions to go with his goal, while Johnson finished with five saves.Â
D.C. United are now 6-8-11 with 29 points and sit 12th in the Eastern Conference. The Black-and-Red hold a [record] all-time mark against Charlotte FC in regular season play, including [record] at home, and dropped the first meeting of 2026 by a 3-1 scoreline at Bank of America Stadium on August 22. D.C. United return to action on Saturday, September 26, when the Black-and-Red travel to face Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.Â
