D.C. United faced an intense match up against Charlotte FC, with persistent offensive attempts and strong defensive effort throughput the opening half. The Black-and-Red were able to produce multiple chances in the first half with the help from João Peglow, Kimito Nono, Keisuke Kurokawa, and Louis Munteanu. After an aggressive stretch of play, Charlotte FC was able to get on the board with a goal from midfielder Ashley Westwood. Coming out of the break, D.C. United was hungry to level the score.
