D.C. United are set to play against New York City FC in their 31st match of the 2021 Major League Soccer (MLS) Regular Season on Saturday, October 23, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. ET. D.C. United will continue their playoff push at Yankee Stadium in a key game against the eighth place New York City FC.

In their last match on Wednesday, D.C. United lost 3-2 against the New England Revolution. The Black-and-Red were unable to find an equalizer despite a late goal from Ramón Ábila in stoppage time. United created multiple goalscoring opportunities after a total of 20 shots, with nine finding the target. Nigel Robertha played a crucial part in the team's success in the attacking half of the field scoring the first goal, and adding two other shots on target with one key pass.

New York City FC is coming off a 1-1 draw against Atlanta United FC on Wednesday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Gudmundur Thórarinsson was able to find a late equalizer in the 90th minute to earn a point for New York as they push to get above the playoff line. NYCFC ended the night with 45.7% possession and four shots on target.

D.C. United have an all-time record of 5-8-3 against New York City FC. The last time the two faced each other was on June 27 at Yankee Stadium, where Thiago Andrade found a late game-winner in second-half stoppage time for New York City. Both D.C. United and New York City have 41 points, with D.C. United sitting in seventh place and New York in eighth place in the standings.
