Head Coach René Weiler remains unbeaten through his first three matches with D.C. United (1-0-2), earning the club’s first win since May 31 with a 2-1 road victory over New York City FC. Christian Benteke returned from suspension and assisted Gabriel Pirani on the game-winner, while João Peglow added a strong shift in his return from injury. Pirani’s brace secured all three points, his fifth and sixth MLS goals of the season, and a spot on the Team of the Matchday. With only six games (including the friendly) left this season, Weiler will be using Saturday as another opportunity to analyze the roster heading into the offseason.
D.C. United now welcomes Club América, Liga MX’s most decorated club, to the nation's capital. Founded in 1916, Las Águilas have won 16 league titles and seven Concacaf Champions Cup titles. They are one of only seven member clubs from Mexico’s top division to never have been relegated. With legends like World Cup goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, goalscoring legends Hugo Sanchez and Cuahtemoc Blanco, Las Águilas have established a significant and enduring legacy in Mexican soccer that rivals no other.
Club América are currently in second place in the Liga MX Apertura with a 5-0-2 record and a goal differential of +9. Las Águilas are unbeaten in the last four matches, outscoring their opponents 10-3, with forward Brian Rodríguez leading the charge with three goals and two assists in seven matches played. Club América’s attack also includes former Newcastle United forward Allan Saint-Maximin, who signed with the club on Aug. 12. Sain-Maximin has scored in Club Américas' last two matches, having two goals from three shots in 58 minutes played. Las Águilas’ roster also includes Mexico National Team players Henry Martín, Luis Malagón, and former Barcelona and LA Galaxy star Jonathan Dos Santos.
