Goalkeeper Bill Hamid signs with Danish team FC Midtjylland

United goalkeeper Bill Hamid has signed with Danish top-tier side FC Midtjylland on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with the Black-and-Red.

Hamid made club history as United’s first Homegrown Player when he signed with the first team on Sept. 2, 2009 after joining the academy in 2007. The 26-year-old made his full debut the following season and became the youngest goalkeeper in MLS history to win a match when United defeated the Kansas City Wizards 2-1 on May 5, 2010. Over the course of his eight-year tenure with United, Hamid set club records in starts (184), minutes (16,269), wins (66), saves (642) and shutouts (49). In 2014, Hamid was nominated as an MLS All-Star, selected to the MLS Best XI and was named the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.

The Annandale, VA, native made his United States Men’s National Team debut in a 1-0 win over Venezuela on January 22, 2012. Hamid has earned three caps for the USMNT (two shutout performances) and was a part of the 18-man roster that won the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2013 and 2017.

“Bill represents the soccer dream in the United States. He’s a local player who grew up supporting the club and was recruited into our academy because of his potential. His tireless work ethic earned him D.C. United’s first Homegrown contract and he’s been a fixture for the club ever since,” United General Manager and V.P. of Soccer Operations Dave Kasper said. “We wish Bill the best of luck in this next chapter as he continues to grow and push for a starting spot on the U.S. National Team. We thank him for all he’s given to our organization and our fans during his time in D.C.”

In 2017, Hamid started in 24 games for the Black-and-Red and recorded six shutouts. His performances in goal earned him seven MLS Save of the Week nominations (winning one) and he was featured four times on the MLS Team of the Week. Hamid also became the fourth youngest player in MLS history to reach 15,000 minutes played when he started in a match against Philadelphia on May 13, 2017.
