Bill Hamid may have conceded a goal in Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Orlando City, but the homegrown goalkeeper still put his name in the history books.
The goal scored by Dom Dwyer in the 63rd minute at Orlando City Stadium was the first that Hamid had allowed all year. His shutout streak ended at 435 minutes, a new record for the 10-year Black-and-Red veteran.
The last time someone scored on Hamid was in last season’s playoff match against the Columbus Crew. In the first three matches of 2019, Hamid recorded 10 saves on 34 shots. With three shutouts in three games, D.C. United began 2019 with their best defensive start in team history.
On Sunday night, the Black-and-Red faced a strong attack from Orlando City. D.C. United faced 16 shots from the Lions and Hamid made four saves. While the Lions were able to sneak in a goal, Hamid kept them from scoring the equalizer in the final moments of the game. He came up with a few brilliant saves to give the Black-and-Red their first road win in their last 11 away games.
Hamid has a total of 57 shutouts for D.C. United over his ten-year career. His single-season record is ten clean sheets--but with three in four matches, Hamid may be on his way to breaking that record.
In the club’s history, only two goalkeepers have tallied double-digit shutouts behind Hamid: Nick Rimando with 29 and Troy Perkins with 24 - but neither held as long of a shutout streak with D.C. United as the homegrown veteran.
