United goalkeeper Bill Hamid has been called up to the U.S. Men’s National Team to face New Zealand at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, Oct. 11, along with six other additions.
Following the 2-0 win against Cuba, Kellyn Acosta, Juan Agudelo, Matt Besler, Terrence Boyd, Michael Orozco and Tim Parker will join Bill Hamid and the team in the nation’s capital.
10 players have been returned to their clubs, John Brooks, Geoff Cameron, Timmy Chandler, Ethan Horvath, Fabian Johnson, Jordan Morris, Christian Pulisic, Chris Wondolowski, Bobby Wood and DeAndre Yedlin.
This season, Hamid has started 19 matches after an injury ruled him out for the start of the season. The Annandale, Va., native has recorded five shutouts and 61 saves, making his 500th career save earlier this year. He has also been nominated for Phillips 66 Save of the Week 11 times.
Only 25, Hamid already holds club records in numerous goalkeeping categories, including saves (537), wins (57) and shutouts (43). His career 1.26 Goals Against Average is good for third all-time among active players with at least 50 games played and is fourth among active goalkeepers in saves. Now in his seventh MLS season, Hamid became the first Homegrown Player to win MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and the first Homegrown goalkeeper to be selected to the MLS All-Star Team in 2014.
Hamid has two career appearances for the national team and in 2015, he was called into the national team three times for friendly matches against Mexico in April, against Costa Rica in October, and for 2018 World Cup Qualifying matches against St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago in November. His most recent start came in a friendly against Ireland on Nov. 18, 2014.
Hamid will be joined by United teammate, Steve Birnbaum, who earned his ninth cap in the 2-0 win over Cuba on Friday.
