5 Observations from Houston: October 2014

This was a quick road trip, only in Houston for 30 hours, but there are still plenty of things to talk about.

1. WE WON
That one is pretty self explanatory. We finally won in Houston and by doing so we put ourselves in a great position to win the Eastern Conference. With one point in the remaining two games we will clinch first place in the East and secure home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

2. We have great fans – and a potential new good luck charm
Garret and Lisa Stackman (DCU Season Ticket Holders for 8 years) joined us for our journey to Houston as part of an adidas Sweepstakes and epitomized what our fans are all about. They are passionate, dedicated, enthusiastic and more importantly, they are great people. This is their second road trip of the season, also flying to San Jose, and they are 2-0 on the road. We might be on to something here.

3.  Rain delays aren’t ideal
A 72 minute rain delay isn’t ideal to say the least. Good news, Steve Goff and I got to catch up on life. Bad news, we had 72 minutes to do so. The delay also puts a lot of pressure on Francisco Tobar (Team Administrator) and Dan Deming (Assistant Equipment Manager) as the team had just 25 minutes to shower, change, speak to media, clean up the equipment and hit the road to make it to its 7:00 p.m. CST flight. To put this in to perspective, this is usually a 60 minute ordeal.

4.  Taylor Kemp’s college rumors are exposed
After the game Steve Goff is interviewed Taylor Kemp about his first ever MLS goal, and brings up that he scored two goals in college. Within earshot is Bobby Boswell, Jared Jeffrey and Joe Willis, who couldn’t pass up the chance to give Kemp a little ribbing during his interview.

Goff:  So it looks like you scored two goals while in college, that sound about right?
Kemp: Yeah, that sounds right.
Willis: Wait a second here, Kemp, you told me you led the team in scoring in college?
Jeffrey: Funny thing is he told me the same thing.
Boswell: The truth is all coming out now isn’t it, Kemp.

5. The Westin Galleria has amazing French Toast
This has absolutely no bearing on the game, but holy smokes was their french toast good. On my french toast scale I give it an A+, and those don’t come easy. It’s a close contestant with Toronto’s corn bread croutons for favorite road food item this year.
