Earmarked during his rookie season with D.C. United as the future heir to the US goalkeeping throne, Hamid faces lofty expectations. He’s already endured his share of setbacks, including the shoulder surgery that prematurely ended his first season in the league and the painful and lengthy rehab that followed. But there’s no doubt he’s returned this year as a steady presence and essential cog for DC’s rebirth, and he’s been rewarded with two call-ups under the new regime of US head coach Jurgen Klinsmann. Hamid is big, athletic and fearless. And he’s only 20 years old.

What the TDs and coaches say: “Can be a fantastic ‘keeper as he grows … Compared to other goalkeepers in his age bracket, he has a more quickness and a presence you want in a goalkeeper … He’s got great reactions and his angles are good … He’s explosive including boxing or catching crosses … His physical attributes are unique and tremendous. Needs to build on the ability to organize and control the back line … Needs to grow to be more consistent between making the incredible save and losing focus on the simple one.”
