United welcome dynamic attacking threat Lloyd Sam

Lloyd Sam knows all about D.C. United.  The newest member of the Black-and-Red has made 13 appearances against his now-current team since entering Major League Soccer in 2012 and made his debut as a substitute at RFK Stadium on August 29, 2012.

The nifty winger scored five times against United during his time with the New York Red Bulls and was a key component in seven United defeats (including three playoff losses) over the past five seasons. United fans will now hope to see the Ghanaian international (who also made his international debut and sole cap here at RFK) replicate his goal-scoring and creative form on the opposite end of the field for the Black-and-Red.

“Lloyd is a guy who has been successful in MLS,” head coach Ben Olsen said. “He’s got a final ball. He’s one of the best guys in the league in getting crosses off and connecting with forwards, but can also score.”

One of the more heart-wrenching memories for Black-and-Red fans came when Sam scored the game-winner in the dying embers of the match on September 10, 2014. After a goalless 90 minutes, Lloyd Sam gathered a pass inside the six-yard box and fired a low shot into the far corner of the goal to secure a 1-0 win for New York.

But with the move now in the past, Sam is only looking forward. “All of that is over. It’s amazing how quickly it changes,” the winger said. “My alliance is obviously on this side now.”

Sam’s arrival undoubtedly changes the attacking dynamic of United. His versatility will allow him to get to the byline and find key crosses while his technical ability on the ball gives him the opportunity to carve out opportunities when he cuts into the center of the field. The winger is also adept on both sides of the ball. “Lloyd’s a two-way player. He understands when to go and attack, as well as his role defensively,” Olsen said. “He has a great attitude and is excited about a new start.”

As far as what fans can expect for when Sam takes the field for the Black-and-Red?

"Hopefully some attacking flair, creating chances and getting some goals."
