Happy birthday D.C. United!
In late 1994, several soccer executives gathered in a New York City lunch room and began discussing the name that would adorn a future Major League Soccer club that would call Washington DC home. It was unanimous that the moniker should be true to the traditions and characteristics of soccer worldwide and that the club should be known to bring together disparate communities for matches. D.C. United spoke to all of the desired goals for the franchise name and October 17, 1995, the club came to life with a name, logo and uniforms!
Along with the name, D.C. United carried a tradition of excellence. The Black-and-Red is the winner of 13 major domestic and international titles, including the first ever MLS Cup Championship and this year's US Open Cup. Cheers to the loyal fans who've supported us for the past 18 years, we're proud to call the District our home, and we look forward to many birthdays ahead!
