#TBT: Rain-soaked RFK sees United lift MLS Cup '97

Today's rainy weather takes us back to MLS Cup '97, when a downpour in the District couldn't stop D.C. United from winning its second consecutive League title.

A crowd of 57,431—the second-largest soccer attendance in RFK Stadium history—braved the harsh conditions to watch the Black-and-Red defeat the Colorado Rapids 2-1. Jaime Moreno and Tony Sanneh provided D.C.'s scoring on the night, and Moreno, who was recently inducted in the organization's Hall of Tradition, collected man-of-the-match honors. Following its previous triumph in 1996, United extended its early MLS dominance with its second title in as many years.

"It's an unbelievable feeling," D.C. captain John Harkes told the Washington Post. "What we have accomplished this year is amazing. We've started a tradition here, a tradition in class and style-D.C. United style."

It may not have been the most comfortable night at RFK, but it will certainly be a night that fans and players will never forget.
