United's final preseason test washed out in Charleston

Fans in rain - DL

Though D.C. United did not play Saturday night due to heavy rain in the Charleston area, the Black-and-Red did have a television presence on Saturday morning. The above advertisement ran in the Washington metropolitan area during the ESPN broadcast of an EPL clash between Liverpool and Arsenal.

United's hopes of squeezing in a final dress rehearsal ahead of next Saturday's opener were dashed as steady rain and lightning engulfed the Charleston area. The Carolina Challenge Cup match against Columbus would have been the Black-and-Red's last appearance before March 10, when D.C. welcomes Sporting Kansas City to RFK.

Head coach Ben Olsen had planned to use a lineup that would have closely-resembled the one he hopes to deploy against Kansas City next week, so the rainout denied the young coach a final, live, evaluation of tactics and personnel.  Still, D.C. will enter the regular season with some momentum after chalking up back-to-back wins against Chicago and Charleston over the last week.

With six points through two matches, United ends up atop the 2012 Carolina Challenge Cup table.  As a result, D.C. can claim the preseason tournament title for the third straight year.
