United got a goal from rookie Chris Pontius on an incredible 25-yard smash in the sixth minute, but Lawson Vaughn gave the home side a penalty in the 62nd minute that was put away by Lopez to draw Toluca even. The 1-1 score line stood at the final whistle.
The draw means United must wait and see what happens in the CD Marathon-Jabloteh game on Thursday evening. A draw or Marathon loss means United would advance to the knockout stage, while a Marathon win results in elimination from the regional tournament.
Marathon and Jabloteh play at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday.
UPDATE: Get this - according to the League office, MLS teams are 0-17-2 all-time playing meaningful games (meaning, not including friendlies) in Mexico against Mexican squads. This evening's result was just the second draw - ever! - on Mexican soil, while the Houston Dynamo played to a wild 4-4 game versus Pumas in Mexico City last year. A very impressive result for the Black-and-Red. Now, we're all Jabloteh fans.
