D.C. United lost in Vancouver, 1-0 against the Whitecaps on August 17 at BC Place. The Black-and-Red slid to fourth place in the Eastern Conference with the loss, while Vancouver remains in the last place of the Western Conference.

Head Coach Ben Olsen changed the formation from the previous match as he opted to play with two strikers upfront with Wayne Rooney and Paul Arriola getting the start. Felipe played against his former team as he was handed his second start for the Black-and-Red while Junior Moreno returned to the starting lineup after serving a one-match suspension for the red card he received against Philadelphia on August 4.

In the first half, D.C. United started strong, dominating possession and creating a few chances before the Whitecaps opened the scoring in the 18th minute. Vancouverā€™s Yordy Reyna collected the ball near the edge of the box and fired a low shot past Bill Hamid to give the Whitecaps a 1-0 lead. Vancouver continued to drop deep into their own half for the remainder of the first half as the Black-and-Red piled on the chances, but were unable to find the back of the net.

In the second half, United again dominated possession with over 60 percent of the ball. Ulises Segura made his 50th appearance for the Black-and-Red as he started and played 56 minutes before being subbed off for Luciano Acosta. New signings Emmanuel Boateng and Ola Kamara were given their debuts for D.C. United as both players made appearances off the bench. Goalkeeper Bill Hamid had an uneventful night as he only made one save. Despite having 24 shots, the Black-and-Red could not score as Vancouverā€™s defense held strong for 90 minutes and recorded just their sixth victory of the season.
