D.C. United will host New York City FC for a Round of 16 matchup in the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.  The Black-and-Red have won the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup three times in club history (1996, 2008, 2013), and have an overall record of 40-17-0 in the competition.  D.C. United are currently tied for second place with a record of 7-4-6 in the Eastern Conference of MLS, while New York City FC sit in sixth place with a record of 5-1-8.

The Black-and-Red are looking to continue their fine form at Audi field as they are undefeated in their last five matches at home.  In their last match, D.C. United defeated the Philadelphia Union in the Fourth Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on June 12. Neither team were able to score in regulation, so the game went into extra time.  Union forward Anthony Fontana opened the scoring in the second half of extra time to give Philadelphia the 1-0 lead. The Black-and-Red bounced back with substitute Chris McCann heading in a cross from Wayne Rooney in the 118th minute to give him his first goal for the club.  Two minutes later, Luciano Acosta was brought down in the box earning a penalty which Wayne Rooney converted in the final seconds to give D.C. United the 2-1 victory.
D.C. United captain Wayne Rooney leads the team with nine goals and six assists in all competitions this season.  Homegrown midfielder Antonio Bustamante and goalkeeper Chris Seitz made their competitive debuts for the Black-and-Red against Philadelphia.  Seitz recorded five saves on the night while Bustamante played 73 minutes and impressed with his passing ability. With Paul Arriola and JĆŗnior Moreno on international duty with the USMNT and Venezuela, respectively, other players will be called on to fill their void.

New York City FC are coming off a 4-0 victory against USL side North Carolina FC on June 12 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. New York City hardly gave North Carolina a chance, as they dominated throughout the match scoring two goals in each half.  Brazilian forward Heber leads New York City with six goals while Maximiliano Moralez has the most assists on the team with nine. He trails only Calor Vela of LAFC for the most assists in MLS this season.
This will be just the second Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match in club history at Audi Field as D.C. United look to add silverware to their trophy cabinet.  Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM ET and will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
