Playoff Picture: How United can clinch playoff spot

Following their 1-0 victory over FC Dallas at Audi Field on Saturday night, D.C. United currently sit in one of the two remaining playoff spots still up for grabs in the Eastern Conference. Currently holding on to that spot with a slim one-point lead over Montreal, the Black-and-Red have three regular season games left to definitively punch their ticket to the postseason, and could clinch a playoff spot as early as Sunday. Here's how United can qualify for playoffs. 


How United can clinch on Sunday, October 21

  • If D.C. United win their Wednesday match against Toronto FC and win Sunday against New York City FC, United will clinch a playoff spot.
  • If D.C. United beat either Toronto FC or New York City FC, and Montreal lose on Sunday against Toronto, United will clinch a playoff spot.
  • If D.C. United draw against Toronto FC and win Sunday against New York City FC, and Montreal draw Toronto on Sunday, United will clinch a playoff spot.


How United can clinch on Sunday, October 28

  • If D.C. United win one of their matches against Toronto FC or New York City FC, and win against the Chicago Fire, United will clinch a playoff spot.
  • If D.C. United draw or lose against Toronto FC and New York City FC, then win against the Chicago Fire, and the Montreal Impact draw or lose to Toronto and the New England Revolution, United will clinch a playoff spot.
  • If D.C. United draw or lose all three remaining games, and the Montreal Impact lose both of their remaining games, United will clinch a playoff spot.
  • If D.C. United draw two or more of their remaining games, and the Montreal Impact draw or lose both of their remaining games, United clinch a playoff spot.
