How United can clinch on Sunday, October 21
- If D.C. United win their Wednesday match against Toronto FC and win Sunday against New York City FC, United will clinch a playoff spot.
- If D.C. United beat either Toronto FC or New York City FC, and Montreal lose on Sunday against Toronto, United will clinch a playoff spot.
- If D.C. United draw against Toronto FC and win Sunday against New York City FC, and Montreal draw Toronto on Sunday, United will clinch a playoff spot.
How United can clinch on Sunday, October 28
- If D.C. United win one of their matches against Toronto FC or New York City FC, and win against the Chicago Fire, United will clinch a playoff spot.
- If D.C. United draw or lose against Toronto FC and New York City FC, then win against the Chicago Fire, and the Montreal Impact draw or lose to Toronto and the New England Revolution, United will clinch a playoff spot.
- If D.C. United draw or lose all three remaining games, and the Montreal Impact lose both of their remaining games, United will clinch a playoff spot.
- If D.C. United draw two or more of their remaining games, and the Montreal Impact draw or lose both of their remaining games, United clinch a playoff spot.
