The Opposition: Toronto FC

On Wednesday night, D.C. United return to Audi Field for a midweek matchup against defending MLS Cup Champions Toronto FC. A win against Toronto would help solidify United’s playoff chances going into the weekend and give them on opportunity to clinch at home on Sunday. Here's a breakdown of the Black-and-Red's opponents from the north.

Recent Matches

Toronto FC have three losses and two wins in their last five matches. In their most recent game, the Reds hosted one of their Canadian rivals, the Vancouver Whitecaps, and lost 2-1, with their lone goal coming from a Jozy Altidore PK. Still, Toronto have scored in four of their last five matches, totaling 12 goals during that stretch. They have also allowed ten goals during that stretch, struggling to outscore their opponents. Toronto are currently in the No. 8 spot in the Eastern Conference standings, but have been eliminated from playoff contention.

Players To Watch

Despite being eliminated from playoffs, Toronto’s offensive firepower has the potential to give United trouble. The Reds have a range of goal-scorers, including Victor Vazquez, Sebastian Giovinco, and Jozy Altidore. They often force games into high-scoring affairs, such as their 4-4 draw against United in Toronto earlier this year. However, they recently lost one of their top threats, Vazquez, with a knee injury.

Head-to-Head

D.C. United faced off against Toronto FC once earlier this year and drew 4-4. The match included a brace from Yamil Asad and additional goals from Paul Arriola and Darren Mattocks. This game took place on June 13, though— in the midst of United's difficult road trip and before the Black-and-Red's additions of Wayne Rooney and Bill Hamid, and the return of Russell Canouse.

Playoff Implications

Toronto FC have already been eliminated from the postseason, meaning their showing Wednesday night will be about pride and the potential to spoil United's plans. The Black-and-Red currently hold the last playoff spot, with three games remaining in the regular season. A win on Wednesday night would create a four-point gap between United and the No. 7 Montreal Impact, pushing the Impact to the brink of elimination and giving United a bit more breathing room as they close out their regular season campaign.
