United have acquired Vancouver’s veteran goalkeeper David Ousted and signed him to a two-year contract in exchange for the Black-and-Red’s natural second round pick in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft.

Ousted was a consistent figure in Vancouver’s starting XI after securing the starting role for the Canadian club in 2014. The goalkeeper made 441 saves and recorded 43 shutouts in 145 total MLS appearances in five seasons with the Whitecaps. The 32-year-old made at least 28 appearances in four out of five regular seasons with Vancouver and missed only one MLS match for the Whitecaps in three years (2014-2016). His performances in goal helped lead the team to three Audi MLS Cup Playoff berths (2014, 2015, 2017) and he started in all four of the club’s 16/17 CONCACAF Champions League knockout round matches.

The Greve, Denmark native has 23 career MLS Save of the Week nominations and has won the award on seven different occasions. In 2015, the Danish ‘keeper won three consecutive Save of the Week awards, the first of the three was for his dual penalty kick saves against two-time MLS Golden Boot winner Bradley Wright-Phillips on June 20, 2015. His performances that season led Vancouver to the 2015 Amway Canadian Championship and he was a runner-up selection for the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award. Ousted also earned a 2015 MLS All-Star selection and recorded a clean sheet in the second half of the 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur F.C. on July 29.

“Since his arrival in MLS, David has proven to be one of the elite goalkeepers in the league,” Dave Kasper, United general manager, said. “He has it all in terms of commanding his box, organizing the group in front of him, and making the saves that change games. We are excited to have his veteran experience in the locker room and on the field this season and beyond.”

Ousted leads active MLS goalkeepers in the following regular season categories:

  • T-5th for PK save percentage for goalkeepers who have faced more than 15 penalties (25%)
  • 5th in shutouts (42)
  • 8th in saves (432)
  • 8th in appearances (142)

The goalkeeper started his career with Brøndby IF in the top tier of Danish soccer in the Alka Superliga in 2003 and went on to play for a number of teams in the country before establishing himself. The 32-year-old made his professional debut while on loan with Nykøbing FC where he made 15 appearances in 2005. He then made an additional 24 appearances on another loan spell with Akademisk Boldklub Gladsaxe in the 2005/2006 season. The 2015 MLS All-Star then signed with Hellerup IK in 2006 and made 16 appearances before making a name for himself with SønderjyskE Fodbold (58 appearances from 2007-2010). He signed with Randers FC in the summer of 2010 and went on to make 116 appearances for the club before he made the transition to Major League Soccer with Vancouver on June 20, 2013.
