This week in From the Vault, the Washington Diplomats played in front of the largest home crowd in the club's history (53,351), but fell to the New York Cosmos in a shootout on June 1, 1980. On May 30, 1992, John Harkes scored in the 87th minute to cap a 3-1 United States win over the Republic of Ireland. Jaime Moreno scored the 100th goal of his illustrious career in a 5-1 rout over the Columbus Crew on May 31, 2006, while Andy Najar’s first career MLS goal leveled things up against Zach Thornton and Chivas USA. Three days later, Najar’s skills were on display again to score one of the more memorable goals in United’s history and propel the Black-and-Red over Real Salt Lake in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Finally, the U.S. Mens National team defeated second-ranked Germany 4-3 in front of a sold out crowd, who helped commemorate the 100th anniversary of the U.S. Soccer Federation and watched the USMNT's record improve to 14-3-5 at RFK stadium on June 2, 2013.
