In 1996, United acquired future United States National Team member Eddie Pope, Jesse Marsch and Mario Gori in college and supplemental drafts. Major League Soccer's inaugural season began with several different player acquisition options and United's picks paid off, winning the first-ever MLS Cup later that year. The same year, the Black-and-Red also traded for goalkeeper Jeff Causey in exchange for a first round pick and Garth Lagerway. More recently, United hosted back-to-back quarterfinals in the CONCACAF Champions League in 2014-15 and 2015-16. On March 1, 2016, rookie midfielder Julian Buscher scored his first goal for the club.
