Kofi Opare re-signs with D.C. United

WASHINGTON (Sept. 15, 2015) – D.C. United and Kofi Opare have agreed to a multi-year contract extension. In his third season in MLS, Opare has one goal in a career-high 15 regular season appearances (14 starts), and he is the only D.C. United player to have scored in three competitions: the MLS regular season, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and the 2015-16 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League.


“Kofi has been a competitor and dependable contributor since his arrival,” said D.C. United General Manager and Vice President of Soccer Operations Dave Kasper. "He is a young central defender with presence and  upside, and we're excited to have him in our plans moving forward."


Opare has two appearances (two starts) in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and two appearances (two starts) in the 2015-16 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League. He registered his first D.C. United goal in a 2-1 regular season win over Orlando City on May 13, then scored in United’s 3-1 win at the USL Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the U.S. Open Cup and in a 3-0 win over Montego Bay United on Aug. 25 in the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League.


Opare was acquired by D.C. United from the Los Angeles Galaxy on July 29, 2014. As part of the transaction, the teams traded allocation rankings, and United acquired the Galaxy’s second round pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft. Opare was originally selected by the Galaxy in the of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft following four seasons at the University of Michigan. Opare had one goal in 12 appearances (11 starts) with Los Angeles.
