Coming off a 4-1 win over FC Dallas, D.C. United flew to the west coast to take on the Portland Timbers. In a back-and-forth game that saw five goals, DCU fell just short in Oregon. Davy Arnaud’s 40-yard equalizer was canceled out by Portland’s Mamadou Danso’s go-ahead goal just before halftime. With 12 minutes left, Danso scored again, only this time it was an own goal, which tied it up 2-2. Maximiliano Urruti finished the game-winner with seconds remaining, and United lost 3-2.

In its second away game in a row, United found its first road win of 2014. The Black-and-Red held on to the lead with team defending and stellar saves from Bill Hamid.

The end of a two-game homestand saw a dominating performance from the Black-and-Red. Espíndola and Rolfe both found the back of the net, assisting on each other’s strikes as well. It was the team’s fourth shutout of the year.

May 24, 2014: New England Revolution 2 – D.C. United 1
Gillette Stadium

On the road at England, D.C. United fell behind the Revs 1-0 just after halftime. Battling back, Espíndola found the equalizer in the 73rd minute. But that score wouldn’t hold for too long, as Diego Fagundez netted the game-winner in the 77th minute.

May 31, 2014: D.C. United 1 – Sporting Kansas City 0

In its sixth game of the month, United bested the reigning MLS Cup Champions Sporting Kansas City.
