5v2 3-13-14

After a 2–0 win over the Houston Dynamo May 21 at RFK Stadium, the team returned to the RFK training field to prepare for its upcoming trip to Foxborough, Mass., to face the New England Revolution on May 24 (7:30 p.m., Comcast SportsNet). The starters from the Dynamo game had a separate session indoors to recuperate.

As usual, the Black-and-Red began with an energetic 5v2 keep away, before going into a dynamic stretching warm up circuit. Afterwards, they moved into a quick passing and agility drill. The players had to pass to ball amongst one another, before jumping over a small hurdle.

On the other side of the field, goalkeepers Andrew Dykstra and Joe Willis did separate stretching with Goalkeeping Coach Preston Burpo.

Following a quick water break, the team was split into two groups of seven, distinguishing themselves with yellow and blue pinnies, whilst playing in half the length of the regular pitch.

For the first phase of the drill, the team with possession had a one man advantage, placing a stronger emphasis on communication between defenders. For the blue team, Conor Doyle had two goals, while on the yellow team Eddie Johnson and Luis Silva had one goal each. Silva’s goal proved to be the game-winner in the scrimmage.

To complete the day’s training, the team played a four minute game with six players on each side. Once again, Doyle converted for the blue team before Sean Franklin of the yellow team equalized. Shortly after Franklin’s strike, the game ended and the group moved to post-workout stretching.
