Through its 18th season, Major League Soccer has had nine expansion years. With the announcement of New York City FC, the 20th team to join MLS, we take a look back at how D.C. United has performed against expansion clubs in their inaugural MLS regular seasons.
The Black-and-Red has outperformed expansion clubs with a 17-8-3 regular-season record. United swept the opening-season series against four different clubs: the Chicago Fire, Chivas USA, Real Salt Lake and Toronto FC. Below are the year-by-year regular season records between D.C. This weekend, D.C. United hosts the Portland Timbers. D.C. remains undefeated against the Timbers with an all-time record of 1-0-2.
