Rafael’s strike on Saturday the 2nd-fastest goal in a D.C. United debut start

Young Designated Player (DP) Rafael’s stunning game-tying 22nd-minute strike from distance on Saturday is the second-fastest goal in a debut start in club history. D.C. United would go on to lose this match 2-1 to the Columbus Crew, but the Brazilian DP’s goal will be forever etched into the team’s history books. Only Jaime Moreno notched a quicker strike in his debut start, hitting the back of the net only four minutes into his first match with United on Aug. 7, 1996:

  1. Jaime Moreno: 4’ into debut start (8/7/96)
  2. Rafael: 22’ into debut start (3/23/13)

When including substitute performances, Rafael’s long-range effort was the sixth-fastest goal all-time in Black-and-Red history:

  1. Jaime Moreno: 4’ into debut (8/7/96)
  2. Mark Lisi: 8’ into debut (4/7/01)
  3. Charlie Davies: 11’ into debut (3/19/11)
  4. Nick DeLeon: 13’ into debut (3/18/12)
  5. Ali Curtis: 21’ into debut (3/23/02)
  6. Rafael: 22’ into debut (3/23/13)
