In the first leg of the Atlantic Cup, D.C. United Homegrown goalkeeper Bill Hamid was at his best and preserved a crucial 0-0 draw on the road for the Black-and-Red. Making a single-game season-high seven saves – almost matching his career-best of eight – Hamid recorded his second consecutive clean sheet of 2013. Although the woodwork was his best friend on two occasions, the young American netminder shut down the New York Red Bulls attack throughout the game and even cleared a ball off the line at the death.

“He was great; he has been very good since the moment he got back from (U.S.) National Team Camp,” said Head Coach Ben Olsen. “He is a new man. We talk about consistency with him, making sure he is as even-keeled as possible – on and off the field – he is staying big and making big saves, he is making saves he needs to make, but he is also pulling one or two out of his hat that are saveless.”

After being awarded “MLS Save of the Week” in Week 1 of the 2013 season, Hamid again showed why he’s an early contender for MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. In 2012, Hamid shined, leading the League in saves percentage (77.9%) and also registering the third-best goals against average (1.03). With a pair of U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) World Cup qualifiers just around the corner, Hamid has put himself in a good position to be recalled again by USMNT Head Coach Jurgen Klinsmann.
