In boxing, the tale of the tape is the pre-fight measurement between the two combatants. In 2013, we'll tell the tale of the tape between D.C. United and its foe of the week.
One Win Shy of 300
If D.C. United claims victory tonight over the Red Bulls, then it will be the club’s 300th win across all competitions, making the Black-and-Red the second team in MLS history to achieve the mark.
A Stat That Never Gets Old
D.C. United has been victorious against New York a total of 31 times over the two clubs’ 18-year history – tied for the most wins over another club with the LA Galaxy, who has defeated the Colorado Rapids on 31 occasions as well.
Red Bull Rout: Chris Pontius
Pontius notched his first-ever MLS hat trick on 4/22/12 against New York, leading United to a 4-1 win. Two months later, on 6/24/12 at Red Bull Arena, Pontius tallied a goal just 31 seconds into the match. The header from point-blank range was the fastest goal in the club’s 18-year history and the California native would finish the match with a brace.
De Rosario at the Century Mark
Dwayne De Rosario joined an elite group of goal scorers when he netted his 100th MLS career regular season goal on 8/29/12 against the New York Red Bulls. De Rosario is one of seven MLS players to ever boast this achievement. The Canadian-born midfielder joins Jaime Moreno (2006) as the second D.C. United player to hit the century mark.
Ruiz Looking to Eclipse Lassiter
United forward Carlos Ruiz is one goal away from being MLS’ ninth (outright) leading-scorer all time. Current tied for ninth with Roy Lassiter on the list with 88 goals, El Pescadito was robbed of a goal last Saturday against Real Salt Lake when Nick Rimando made a save on a point-blank shot. Ruiz is also third all-time in goals scored amongst active players, with teammate Dwayne De Rosario as the leader in the category with 100 strikes.
