Romance at RFK

marriage proposal

RFK is for lovers.

Ok, so maybe that slogan won’t replace the ‘Home of the 12thMan’ sign that hangs above Section 332. But, as the above video show, the historic stadium offered up a perfectsetting for romance last weekend.

Jossie Cano has been coming to D.C. United games since 2009,when Cano – a Lance Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps – was first stationed innearby Quantico.  After just onetrip to RFK, he joined the Screaming Eagles and – in his words – ‘has beencoming back ever since’.

Last fall, he started bringing his then-girlfriend KellyVaughn to games.  She immediatelyfell in love – with Dwayne De Rosario’s play.

“He was prepping me for D.C. United back in the fall,”Vaughn explains of her romantic introduction to the Black-and-Red.  “It was when DeRo was doing somethingamazing every single game.  I gotinto it, looked [De Rosario] up a lot and was able to talk to Jossie aboutit.”

Despite the fact that last Saturday’s opponent hailed fromParis, the romantic capital of the world, Vaughn says she had‘no idea’ that a proposal was in the works.  Employing all the secrecy of a last-minute Ben Olsen lineupshift, Cano convinced his fiancée-to-be that he’d be giving a pregame speech onthe field as part of a Marine Corps ceremony.

“RFK and D.C. United have been my home away from home,” Canosaid when asked how he decided on the Black-and-Red’s home turf as a properproposal spot.  “It made sense. Puttwo things together that make me happy – Kelly and D.C. United.  All I needed to do was pop thequestion.”

As you can see in the video, Vaughn said yes.  The couple is planning for a Septemberwedding in 2013.
